Requirements for applying for a 911 position include a high school diploma or GED and the ability to type 30 words per minute. Applicants must also pass a drug screening, psychological screening and background investigation. Attributes that are beneficial to a 911 position include multitasking, computer skills, phone skills, communication skills, and the ability to work shift work and 12 hours shifts. Teamwork is a must!

Telecommunications Specialists work in a dynamic and exciting environment.

Our communications center handles, on average, 250 calls in a 24 hour period. We provide dispatch services to 5 law enforcement agencies, our local EMS (ambulance) provider, 11 city/county fire departments as well as providing after hours services to the citizens and responders of Midland County. We are responsible for coordinating and working with other agencies and services (Red Cross, courts, DPS to name a few), as well as other communication centers and emergency service providers.

Our agency's minimum requirements are: High school diploma or G.E.D., type 30 wpm, computer skills, ability to handle and perform well under stress, excellent customer service skills, as well as outstanding multi-tasking skills.

Abilities include but are not limited to: Excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to handle stressful situations and remain focused under stress; ability to act in a decisive manner, using good judgment; ability to handle a variety of rapidly flowing information at the same time; ability to learn and apply new information; ability to remember numerous details; ability to provide detailed emergency medical instructions to citizens needing medical assistance.

Our telecommunications specialists work 12 hour shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime as needed/required and must pass a complete background investigation, drug screening. and psychological testing.

Trainees undergo an intensive training program that includes classroom instruction, sit-alongs, ride-alongs, and hands-on experience. Trainees are assigned dedicated Communications Training Officers (CTOs) for each of the 4 steps of training, which is approximately 6 months in duration.
